Central Europe’s manufacturing, logistics, and transportation sectors have experienced significant growth over the past two decades. For many years, various industries have had a growing need for better external cooperation and coordination of internal processes that depend on the good functioning of manufacturing, logistics, and warehouses. Intra-organizational as well as inter-organizational cooperation and coordination within a manufacturing and logistics company are crucial to its economic well-being. That’s why many companies have already taken significant steps in business development with software solutions that allow them to gather data and make better forecasts, and thereby they can ultimately benefit from lower operating costs.

ITM INDUSTRY EUROPE 2023 Trade Fair

Between 30.05.2023, Novacura visited ITM INDUSTRY EUROPE linked with MODERNLOG 2023, events associated with the digital age of manufacturing, logistics, transportation, and warehousing. The event was held this year at the International Fair Congress Center in Poznan (Poland) and will run from 30.05 until 2.06.2023. For three days, visitors will have an excellent opportunity to observe developments in the manufacturing, logistics, and warehousing sectors presented by more than 660 exhibitors. During the trade show event, visitors can look around the area, where exhibitions promote in parallel digitization in manufacturing, logistics, and supply chain management, together with industrial cooperation between different sectors.

The event attracted experts from manufacturing and logistics companies operating in international markets.

Modern logistics approach through standardization

During the event, we observed an innovative approach to how companies are evolving better to estimate customer demand within a highly accurate forecast, thereby intensifying the data exchange using digital solutions. Companies demonstrated the need to unify and standardize system processes, which allows for better benchmarking of current production processes and measuring supply chain performance. There was a visible trend among companies related to the need for data extraction to implement best practices for specific operations.

Standardization is required for an automated logistics packaging system, as well as for a returnable packaging system with KLT in FMCG industry. These solutions were presented during the event ITM INDUSTRY EUROPE.

Standardization has been defined as a method of standardizing processes to improve communication between production and supply chain entities. Over the years, we continue to see a lot of inconsistencies in this process due to the high diversity of technology suppliers. An example, can be software solution as WMS, TMS, MES, etc., provided by separate vendors, which does not allow companies to reduce process complexity due to different system approaches and technology.

Barcode scanners presented at the fair are the foundation of a WMS when it comes to remote control and standardization of material flow in manufacturing. Novacura provides WMS functionality for warehouses and manufacturing (see more below).

The standardization process for warehouse and logistics consists of four elements:

Process types

Interrelated processes that include operational and strategic activities, resource scheduling, delivery timeframes, and enabling factors responsible for allowing functions that interact with other domains in the organization, ranging from HR, finance, or sales support processes and business development.

Process categories

Combined processes types and divided into subcategories, where the enabling process category is related to assets, networks, contracts, compliance management, and other similar parties that enable data and information management.

Standardization of production machines depends on IoT connectors to collect data from all operations. Novacura provides IoT connectors for production machines connected to the warehouse and storage.

Process Elements

Include detailed metrics and best practices for process categories in developing and establishing courses of action within defined timeframes that represent the anticipated allocation of supply chain resources to meet production and supply chain requirements.

Implementation

Standardization for all processes based on a single way of implementing solutions in the organization. It should balance integration of all processes and resources with supply chain requirements.

The robotic arms connected to the ERP system with IoT connectors should allow for better management of material flow, which means that material requisition can be managed in a sustainable manner and safe money with proper utilization of resources.

Today’s greatest challenge is maintaining a single methodology for implementing process improvements in a manufacturing, logistics, and transportation. The reason for this is often a problem with implementing of changes that can be poorly managed by the third-party vendors. Taking software providers as an example, we can see that many companies that have contracted software in the past will not be able to implement any process improvements due to costly modifications that are also too complex to be implemented in the required timeframe.

Single improvement methodology for different industries

When it comes to manufacturing, logistics, and supply chain management, these companies often lack standardization for all departments when using an ERP system. ERP cannot be easily modified due to its complexity of system transactions, which are not in line with the requirements of the modern world, which should be resilient to economic changes in the industry. ERP modifications are often not feasible in the short term, and upgrades are always costly and do not guarantee the full operational coverage needed for competitive procurement. As a result, to meet business requirements, many companies are beginning to contract outside service providers for WMS, TMS, MES, etc., that are poorly integrated with ERP.

Digitization and software solutions are the future of manufacturing and logistics. Some exhibitors presented digital solutions for standardized communication between warehouse vehicles.

Standardization of production and logistics systems, distribution, and supply chain is important for efficient order processing.

Novacura offers Novacura Flow software that can support manufacturing and logistics in demand management, production flow management, returns management, and supply chain management, providing solutions such as WMS, MES, and TMS that are fully integrated with ERP. Novacura Flow users can build their own mobile and desktop applications in a cost-effective way. By accessing Novacura Flow based on a low-code platform, personnel can organize business process management in a single system. This ensures that all business processes are fully standardized for all departments, and business areas.

Mobile and desktop apps dedicated to manufacturing, logistics, distribution, supply chain can be built in minutes and deployed immediately for shop floor, warehouse management and supply chain management.  To make the development process easier, Novacura makes ready-made applications available for download from its Marketplace.

Summary

Industries such as manufacturing, logistics, and supply chain are completely interconnected. Therefore, standardizing the handling of each operational area is crucial to ensure proper communication and data exchange. Lack of standardization can lead to huge losses due to delays in deliveries, unplanned production downtime, and improper workforce planning. All of these factors will have financial consequences.
